Safety first — utilities
- Electricity: Turn off the breaker and verify the circuit is dead with a non-contact voltage tester before touching any wiring.
- Water: Shut off the water supply before opening any plumbing connection. Know where your main shutoff valve is.
- Gas: Turn off the gas supply before working near gas lines or gas appliances. If you ever smell gas, leave the area and call your gas company or emergency services immediately — do not try to fix it yourself.

No matter how good a guide looks, some work should never be a DIY project:
- Electrical panel work — breaker boxes, service panels, new circuits, and anything inside the panel. One mistake can kill you or burn your house down.
- Gas lines — installation, repair, or rerouting of any gas piping. Use a licensed gas fitter, period.
- Structural changes — removing or modifying load-bearing walls, beams, foundations, or roof framing. A licensed contractor and, where required, a structural engineer.
- Major plumbing — sewer lines, main water lines, water heater installations, and any plumbing work that requires a permit in your area.
When in doubt, get three quotes from licensed, insured professionals before deciding whether to DIY.
